Fall in Love with Change or Stick with Stuck!

Autumn leaves are a great reminder to get rid of the old and make way for the new. It’s a good time to unclutter your desk, clean out your closet or change up your exercise routine.  Hmmmm…. I wonder if I could shed my old skin, would I look like my baby self?

Doing business today is WAY different than it used to be. Technology is old after a week, the generational gap in the workforce is at its widest in history and corporate cultures have to get with the program to attract and retain talent. 

But the biggest change has to come from within our mindset. 

I have a 61 year-old friend who was given the pink slip from an oil company where she made a healthy piece of change for many years. For the past three years she’s looked for a job without any luck.  

Over qualified. Translation: too old.  

After the proverbial time period of wanting to throw eggs at corporate America, she decided to try something completely different and took an online course to learn how to demonstrate food & wine in supermarkets at $11/hour. Maximizing her people and communication skills, she’s now happily living a stress-free life without the pressure of an impossible workload with an impossible deadline. She meets all kinds of new interesting people every day and has nights and weekends free to enjoy herself.

Imagine that.

Changing her thinking, changed her life. Her perspective of low paying jobs was turned around when she began looking at the positives and broadened her routine job search.

Becoming unstuck means letting go of the familiar and embracing the new.After all, if change wasn’t a good thing we’d still be living in loin cloths with no cell phones.

Now imagine THAT.

Stand Up & Stick Out!

AND……..he’s the candidate people talk about the most.

In the highly competitive entertainment industry, artists are vying for attention from the media, fans, recording labels, agents and producers. When they make it big, the next challenge is how to stay on top to avoid being forgotten. Lady Gaga appears in outrageous costumes, uses unique props to perform  and constantly finds innovative ways to make her entrance on stage.

In today’s marketplace with more companies competing for the same customer and more candidates looking to fill the same job, how do YOU stand out from the crowd?

Innovation. Do something different. Learn new ways of working, marketing, communicating. In this digital age we live in, calling people has become SO seventies. Reach out and touch someone – really. A personal phone call can make or break a deal because it’s simply being human.

As a keynote speaker I was talking to a company at their annual conference who said they have “Thank you Thursdays”. Employees hand write thank you notes to five people every week. Sometimes it’s to customers in appreciation of their business, sometimes it’s to coworkers for helping out with a project. Do you remember the last thank you note you received? 

Stand up and stick out. It will get you noticed by potential customers and bosses…….in a good way

You had me at hello. Now what?

Tom Cruise as Jerry Maguire movie posterTom Cruise would totally have me at hello too. The only difference is I’d be a goo-goo-eyed bumbling mess unlike Renee Zellweger in the movie Jerry Maguire who ends up marrying him.

Oh well……. I’m too tall for him anyway.

So you’ve just landed a new customer/job. You’ve said your first hello and hopefully made a good impression. What’s next? How do you ensure your success? The answer is in a back-to-basics point I make in all my motivational speeches: you build great relationships. You connect with people on a personal level. You treat co-workers, customers and peers like you yourself want to be treated – with courtesy, kindness and respect.

Several months ago I was the keynote speaker at a customer service conference for a sizable electric company in Dallas where the staff turnover rate was almost zero. Everyone was so happy to work for this organization I wondered what was in the water! (just sayin’) I asked several employees why they still loved working there after 28 years and they all said the same thing: they were treated like family by the top management and all the way  down. They felt valued and appreciated. 

Sometimes we all need a reminder that it’s the simple human needs that have a HUGE impact on the success of an organization, an individual or a project.

Alrighty then. Now………………..show me the money!

How the ‘L’ Word can Supercharge your Success

As a professional motivational speaker at corporate and association meetings, I hear a lot about challenges between the generations in the workforce today. From the Millennials who think they rule technology to the Boomers who think they’ve been there done that, each generation seems to have a “know-it-all” attitude, resulting in poor communications, tense work environment, lack of cohesive teamwork and decreased productivity.

Super stressful. SO not fun.

Recently I spoke to a group of franchisees for a national chain of dance studios and their conference theme was “Back to Basics”. It was about using a more human aspect in marketing, managing and working together to attract more customers, boost teamwork and thrive as a small business owner. We talked about building great relationships as a way to personalize business and maximize employee potential. Gershwin photo at piano Since my background consists of many years in the entertainment industry, I made an example of what Lady Gaga, Fred Astaire and George Gershwin have in common as successful entertainers………

Likability.

When people like you they’re willing to help, do business with you, hire you, follow  you, be influenced by you, recommend you, buy your stuff, listen to your opinion, learn from you, bring you purple M & M’s.

In today’s marketplace we all have to learn new ways of working to stay ahead of the competition whether you’re 24 or 64 but, it takes humility to be teachable and it’s easier to play the “know-it-all” game. The problem is – no one likes a Know-It-All.

Get with the program and get back to basics.
